With the introduction of our advanced UV laser engraving system, we’re now able to achieve the same high-quality finish using laser engraving, offering exceptional precision and consistency across a wide range of glassware.

Sandblasted Glass Engraving

The Traditional Gold Standard

Sandblasting engraves glass by firing fine abrasive aluminium oxide or silicon carbide (commonly known as ‘sand’) at the surface through a stencil. This process physically etches the glass, creating a deep, smooth engraving that has long been associated with premium awards.

Excessive heat build-up, which could stress the glass and affect the quality of the engraved finish

Traditionally, glass awards will be engraved, creating a contrast etch against the clear finish, but sometimes your special events are calling out for a little more than that...

Our newest printed awards offer the same quality as our engraved selection, but with the option to add full colour print and graphics, allowing your designs to be bright, bold and beautiful.

We can achieve the print finish through multiple methods, including a UV print directly onto the reverse of the glass, thus ensuring a consistent, precise and top quality finish.

This UV printing technique is also available on our sustainable range. This offers the same premium quality and finish on a range of ethically sourced wooden awards.

Our roots trace back to humble beginnings beneath a local cinema in Clevedon. Today, we proudly operate from two expansive premises with a combined working area of 9,000 sq ft and employ over 35 dedicated staff members from the local community. When forests thrive, people prosper!  Forests help us more than we think!  They regulate our climate, clean the air we breathe, and filter the water we drink.  Forests also provide habitat for more than two-thirds of terrestrial wildlife and plants.  They are one of our most important resources, offering a renewable supply of materials and goods we need for a more sustainable future.

Unfortunately, many forest areas are under attack from illegal logging and other harmful practices.  More than 12 million hectares of forest are lost each year, the equivalent of approx. 150 tennis courts every minute!

We at Brunel are trying to do our bit for the environment with the introduction of our sustainable awards! New to our range is a stunning collection of FSC certified sustainable wooden awards.  Sourced with the environment in mind these beautifully crafted awards are designed to leave a minimal carbon footprint while making a lasting impression. Sandblasting: How it Works

Sandblasting: How it Works

Previously, we discussed why we choose to use the sandblasting technique to engrave glassware rather than laser engraving (read it here if you missed it bruneltrophies.co.uk/blog/sandblasting-vs-laser-engraving ) but we didn’t talk about how this process works.

When engraving particles of aluminium oxide or silicon carbide (commonly known as ‘sand’) are used as the abrasive material. When blasted at a controlled high pressure the sand has the ability to cut shapes, text and logos into the surface of crystal, glass and even some stone to leave a permanent contrast.

At Brunel Engraving Company, Sandblasting is performed by hand with a sandblasting cabinet (see below). The cabinet is not only designed to protect the craftsman but also creates a ‘closed loop system’ that recycles the abrasive ‘sand’ back into the blast nozzle helping to reduce waste. When using a sandblasting cabinet, the glass item is placed inside the cabinet with the design already clearly marked out and isolated to prevent inaccurate abrasion. The cabinet is fitted with protective gloves that our craftsmen use to hold the blast nozzle (similar to an air brush gun) and a foot pedal at the base of the cabinet which allows the user to control the flow of air pressure, turning on and off when necessary. 

A good level of attention to detail is required by the craftsman to ensure that a quality engraving is produced. Too much pressure and the abrasive will cut all through the glass, not enough and the engraving will not show in the glass.

Sandblasting vs Laser Engraving

At Brunel Trophies we choose to sandblast all our glassware rather than laser engraving. We feel that the finished product not only looks better but feels better too. 

We want to continue to always provide a high quality product at an affordable price for all our customers.

By using the sandblasting process on all glass engraved items the quality can be kept to it's highest. You will receive a high contrast in colour engraving, a smooth touch and an extremely high quality look to your product.

The laser engraving process is extremely successful but when using this process on the glass material it can become very unstable. The engraving can have very poor contrast, start to flake away, sharp shards of glass can be left creating a rough surface to touch and the process can be hard to handle.

Why is it important to keep up with new technologies? 

We spoke with owner and director of Brunel Engraving, Martyn Wright, on the importance of keeping up with new technologies in a constantly changing market.  

1. Firstly, do you actually think it is important for businesses to develop alongside new technologies? Yes

2. Why is this? It is paramount for us to keep up with, or ahead of, the competition. Investing in new relevant technologies helps us achieve this.

3. How has your business been directly effected by increasing changes in technology? What have you done about this? More effectively allowing us to produce more products more efficiently at a lower cost. 

4. Technology is a rapidly changing market; how would one know exactly when to invest in new technology considering how quickly it might be made redundant? We have an ongoing program of investment. Any new processes/products would be analysed for their relevance within our business model, if it can be justified we would then make the investment. 

5. What is the most useful piece of technology you have invested in over the last five years?

Digital Print. It has allowed us to develop and expand our core product range.

6. How has investing in new technologies helped you & your business? 

It has allowed us to enter new markets yet still concentrating on our core products.

7. Do you hire in-house staff with specialist knowledge of the technological landscape? 

It is something we would consider but as yet we have had great success in training existing staff, this also helps staff morale as it increases staff prospects.

8. How would you advise smaller businesses to be empowered by harnessing new technologies? 

Embrace new technologies but ensure that there is a market for the product/process that you are intending to promote.

 

Marlow town Regatta and Festival

The Marlow town regatta is a traditional rowing regatta best viewed from the 'regatta enclosure' on the banks of the Thames in Higginson park. Brunel Engraving Company were delighted to produce a range of awards for the event which included Silver cups and Salvers. These items were engraved to the highest standard and presented in quality boxes for the event.
